A range of laser instruments are used by surveyors when they are doing any kind of laser level surveying in the field. Usually equipment using lasers is used to make certain that an object being built or hung stays at the same level through the process. We will consider a few of the laser level types that can be purchased in this short article.

Many different types of laser levels are available for both DIY enthusiasts or professional surveyors. The wide range of types can make buying a suitable one difficult. We hope the information below helps you when making a decision on the correct level for your needs.

Some of the Different Types of Laser levels

1) Plumb and Dot Laser Levels are the type that produce one or multiple dots of reference on the target surface. The dots act as reference points for comparison purposes to make sure the area you are working on remains level.

2) Laser Line Levels. These types of lasers emit a laser line that is level to the surface they are placed on. Generally, these instruments will emit a laser line in one direction only. They are usually used indoors and small and usually hand held. They can also be mounted on other surfaces like a step ladder, a desk or mounted on a jamb pole which leaves the the user with free hands for work.

3) Rotary level Laser. These are laser that emit a rotating laser line in order to show a straight line that circles the complete area instead of being directed at one wall. These levels, however are large and very cumbersome. They must be placed on a tripod which is usually supplied when you buy one. They are set up in the middle of the area being checked.

Automatic or Self Leveling Lasers

All of the above emit the laser beam in different ways but each of them can be bought as self leveling lasers. The majority of surveyors prefer to use these self leveling types of lasers to save time and money on the job. With a self leveling laser, if it is jarred accidentally, it will readjust automatically to the proper level which will save time. So the surveyor need not be constantly standing by the instrument to hold it until the surveying job is complete.

Prices

You can find simple Plumb and Dot laser levels for use around the home for around $15. For more complicated DIY jobs a manual rotary laser can be found from approximately $90. For the use of surveyors heavy duty self leveling rotary laser levels are available from approximately $500 although complete kits can be anything from $800 upwards.
