I'll attempt to give you some feedback on my perceptions regarding this situation.

First, I do believe someone can be considered an expert when they have learned and researched all they can. Maybe leading expert is the right term - I mean there are some things that are no longer part of our lives - they've either been destroyed or died, but if the information is out there and someone can put it altogether, they can make the best guesses.

Now, as for the part about someone taking your work and using it - that's just plain wrong, and stealing in my opinion. Are you saying you have no recourse? No way to prove what you've typed here? I hope that's not the case.

Sounds like you have an opportunity to set the record straight. Maybe draft a letter to the book publisher, and if the author is a scholar, send something to the institution. Just be careful and present the facts and whatever you can to back yourself up. Good luck to you.
